Since 2021, federal and state authorities have coordinated an annual nationwide healthcare fraud “takedown.” This year’s operation seized $245 million, according to the Justice Department.
As part of the 2025 operation, prosecutors filed criminal charges against 324 defendants and initiated 126 civil actions in jurisdictions across the country.
In Illinois, federal prosecutors and the Illinois Medicaid Fraud Control Unit charged 16 individuals in federal or state court. The alleged misconduct includes billing for COVID-19 and genetic tests that were never performed, misbranding foreign-sourced drugs as Botox and Sotox, controlled substance diversion, and other offenses.

Although these coordinated federal and state actions highlight the government’s commitment to protecting public health programs, everyone charged deserves a vigorous defense and a fair opportunity to challenge the allegations.
